A Jesus-loving man and basketball player Stephen (pronounced Stef-en, Steph for short) Curry, developed his faith in God and his skills on the basketball court which are by-products of faith in Christ and hard work. Growing up in Charlotte, N.C., the son of devout Christian parents who began each morning with required family devotional time before school.
From a guy who many thought was too small to play at the highest level, Curry has earned the title of the league’s MVP. He is known for a humble character but Curry does not shy away from a consistent practice regimen or sharing his faith. With “4:13” inscribed on his tennis shoes as a reminder — He can do all things through Christ.
And HE DOES not lose any sleep over his offensive performance. He does his part and trust God to do the rest.
Curry said in an interview with CBN, “I’ve gone 0-for-11 before shooting 3s and 1-for-8, whatever the case is, I always shoot that next shot with optimism and confidence that it’s going in”. What if we as believers prayed and believed with optimism and confidence in God’s ability.
Curry goes on to say in the interview that he works on stuff between practices and games to “get his rhythm,” just seeing the ball going in and working on the mechanics”. Before each practice, Curry has already drained 100 – 150 shots and was in full sweat by the time his peers hit the floor, as note in a YouTube video.
Even his opponents like LeBron James of Miami Heat couldn’t stop raving about Curry’s shooting and passing ability; in his performance against the Heat sending them back to South Beach shaking their heads.
With a finger pointed skyward he lets everyone in the arena know who is in charge when he makes those fantastic shots.
But just like all of us sometimes, in spite of our confidence, optimism, determination, prayer and faith; things go wrong. Like when Curry has a bad offensive shooting night that is highlighted on all the sport channels and papers. Curry lost his temper recently on the Court throwing his mouth piece and cursing a ref (we all lose our temper SOMETIMES). And when Curry was mocked by one of his opponents, Chris Paul who shot a 3 pointer in and did Curry’s signature “shimmy” his face. Curry gets back on defense and waits for the next pass.
Regardless of how many missed shots or passes, Curry believes when he gets his hands on the ball the next time, he’s going to score.
Consistency, practice, optimism and confidence all these have their PART in Success OR Failure. But after repeated practices, getting into the rhythm and mechanics of a game or life, AND exercising our faith in God things GO WRONG. But we don’t have to stay stuck the in last failure or success. We can do just like Steph Curry and others, who get back on defense ready for the next play — optimistic and confident the next shot will go in.
Because WE can DO ALL things through Christ who is our strength.
